Is Sardinia Worth a Visit? Discovering the Island’s Best-Kept Secrets

March 29, 2023By Bellarome Travel

Sardinia, located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, is a true paradise for travelers seeking breathtaking landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and a rich history and culture. The island is famous for its exceptional sea, making it a popular summer holiday destination. However, Sardinia is more than just a beach holiday destination. Rather it offers memorable experiences both in winter and summer, catering to those who love both the sea and the mountains.

The island’s wild and unspoiled hinterland is home to luxuriant vegetation, mountains, and spectacular trekking routes. The Gennargentu Mountain range is a highlight of Sardinia, offering visitors the chance to explore its unspoiled nature. Whether you prefer the sea or the mountains, Sardinia is the ideal place to spend unique and unforgettable moments.

Here are the top three destinations to visit in Sardinia:

       La Maddalena

Maddalena Archipelago Sardinia

The Maddalena Archipelago is a UNESCO World Heritage Site composed of seven major islands. The clear and clean waters surrounding the archipelago are a popular destination for snorkeling enthusiasts and offer visitors the opportunity to discover pristine seabeds in the Mediterranean. Taking a half-day or full-day boat excursion is the best way to enjoy the small beaches and coves that can only be reached by sea. These tours often include a visit to the Island of Budelli and the famous pink beach. Independent travelers can also rent a car on the island of La Maddalena and explore the local beaches on their own. Not sure which islands to visit, check out our blog here.

Alghero

Neptune Cave Alghero Sardinia

Alghero is a seaside town with a Catalan flavor, located about 40 km from Sassari. The city is known for its architectural heritage left by the Spanish dominion and its mixture of Baroque and Rococo churches, Art Nouveau palaces, and neoclassical monuments. Alghero is also home to some of Sardinia’s most important caves, including the Neptune Cave, a real geological marvel for tourists. The cave is also of significant scientific importance, with Neolithic graffiti and burials and pottery dating back to the Neolithic era.

Villasimius

Spiaggio di Porto Giunco Villasimius Sardinia

Villasimius is one of the most popular tourist centers in southern Sardinia, offering visitors archaeological museums and splendid beaches. The town is famous for its crystal-clear waters, coves, and long beaches with pearly white sand. Villasimius also includes two islands: Isola dei Cavoli and Isola di Serpentara. The latter is the site of an annual procession of richly decorated boats to the marine statue of the Virgin of Sailors. Held every third Sunday of July, it is a touching and spectacular event that pays homage to those who lost their lives at sea.
